ULTRASOUND SCAN (US SCAN) 

Ultrasound uses non-ionizing sound wave that is above human hearing. Its transmission power through the human body allows detection of soft tissue abnormality, circulation disturbance and flow velocity.

Ultrasound (Organs in the upper abdomen & pelvis)

 

Ultrasound can detect multitudes of pathologies or organ dysfunction including but not limited to: cirrhosis, fatty liver, liver haemangioma, cholecystitis, gallstone, renal stone, renal cell tumour, renal angiomyolipoma, hydronephrosis, splenomegaly, splenic tumour or other early cancer etc.

 

Additional requirement for exams:

  • For lower abdomen or pelvic US, will need drinking water prior to examination.

  • For gallbladder or upper abdominal US, will need to fast at least 4 – 6 hours before scanning. Drinking water & taking normal medication is allowed.

Ultrasound Elastography  

 

Ultrasound Elastography gives additional information on tissue stiffness which applies in the case of cirrhosis and in differentiating benign from malignant tumour.

Ultrasound Penile Duplex

Ultrasound Penile Duplex is for detecting treatable arterial cause of impotence and to exclude psychological cause. It involves doing duplex exam before and after vasodilator intra-cavernous injection.

Ultrasound for Intussusception

Intussusception (bowel loop folded onto itself) usually presents in young children causing acute abdominal pain, vomiting and rectal bleeding. Ultrasound is useful as a first line investigation to identify this condition.
